Ice Climbing at Camp Alexander
Planning will create a tremendous stress-free experience, and so here are details you will need to "be prepared."
What is this event?
The focus is on learning the fundamental concepts and techniques of ice climbing and building a solid foundation for further development. Basic climbing skills will be introduced and general climbing etiquette. Specific ice climbing techniques will be taught and explored while using a top rope set up. The climbs can be used for the requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge.
When?
3 Ice Climbing Sessions every Saturday during our Ice Climbing Season (January 3, 2026 - *March 15, 2026* :
Session 1 8AM - 11 AM - $80
Session 2 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM - $80
Session 3 (Night Climb) 5:30 PM- 8:30 PM - $80
The price includes an ice climbing patch!
Arrive at the ice wall near the staff bunkhouses 10 minutes before the start of your session.
* Springtime is tricky at Camp Alexander. Depending on the weather, we may add or drop sessions in March. If you reserve a spot in March and we cancel because everything is melting, we will refund your fees.
Once you have made your reservation you need to go into your group and select the session you would like for your scouts to attend. From the dashboard, select "Members" along the left side. All member slots need to be edited so the system lists Name, Email, and DOB to enable a new tab "Activities" within each participant's subpage. In this tab, you will be able to select "Add/remove Activities" to select the time of your session. The tab will not activate if the participant will not be 13 years old on the date of the event. We apologize for the time-consuming process of data entry for large groups." You will need names, birthday dates (for all scouts 13-17) and emergency contacts for all participant.
Who can come?
Camp Alexander offers Ice Climbing for Scouts and Venturers (13 and older), and their adult leaders an opportunity to ice climb.
What should I bring?
Camp Alexander & Front Range Climbing will provide the following items: Helmet, harness, ice-ax, boots, crampons, and ropes.
Personal Gear List (PLEASE bring these items)
Conditions at the South Platte Ice Wall can vary drastically. You will want to bring multiple layers to take on and off when needed. Proper clothing and layering are essential for winter ice climbing. Begin with a moisture-wicking base layer, (long underwear). Add a mid-layer such as a fleece or lightweight jacket. A warm puffy or ski style jacket. Winter style pants (ski gear will work). Head protection should include a warm beanie or hat that fits under a climbing helmet, along with a balaclava or neck gaiter for added coverage. Gloves (mitts do not work well for ice climbing). Wool, synthetic or ski socks (not ankle length- calf or longer) .Waterproof pants and jacket appropriate for winter conditions. Please be aware the crampons are sharp and may cut your pants if you are not careful.
Gloves. Tighter-fitting gloves are preferred so that you can grip the Technical Ice Axe as you climb. Waterproof gloves work the best, and you may need to bring two sets.
Sunglasses or ski goggles. Depending on weather conditions, goggles may be necessary to stay warm and continue climbing.
Cancellations/Refunds?
Q: What about inclement weather, will you cancel Ice Climbing?
A: If it gets too warm and the ice becomes unstable or unsafe we will cancel Ice Climbing.
Q: We can't come or we overbooked, can we get a refund?
A: Unfortunately, due to the nature of small groups, high interest, and a short time window we cannot offer refunds for ice climbing. Please be sure everyone will be able to attend if you reserve a spot.
